A Movement in The Shadows

As a child I often wondered at the passing of momentous events. Were the stories and explanations told and agreed upon by the experts to be taken at face value or was there another explanation?

I imagined great societies locked in timeless wars that for years remained hidden from the public. These forces remaining invisible could operate outside the boundaries established by law and society. Perhaps strange alliances offered benevolence while rival factions labored to sow destruction. Still others sought their own dark objectives, tangential to the world we understand and know.

I could not know if these societies harbored great power, organizing across the continents or if such movements had died in the dark ages leaving behind the ineffectual fraternities we see housed in leased roadside buildings.

I began to see their pitched battles rage in my peripheral vision. Once investigated too closely the mysteries dissolved and disappeared. If they remained these sects all shared a sacred bond: forever working from within the shadows, humanity forever judged unworthy of their forbidden secrets.
