Voyage

The empty quarter may be the world's most legendary desert journey. A friend and I set out to cross Arizona's own empty quarter one day on bicycles. West of Phoenix lie the Harquahala plains, one of the flattest, driest, hottest, places in the state.

Early in the day a chill was in the air but soon the rising sun brought temperature over 100 in spite of weather reports giving a high in the 90's. The sun quickly burnt through the light cloud cover and the landscape left us with little shelter from the searing heat.

We did not see another person the entire day and most often the only trace of civilization was the road we travelled, nothing else.
